Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer according to the American Cancer Society. If you are diagnosed with cancer, Dr. skin cancerKaren Maffei, in Watkinsville, GA, can tell you type you have and supply you with the necessary treatment options.

Types of Skin Cancer:

Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells and often develops on the parts of the skin most exposed to the sun’s rays. Skin cancer affects people of all colors and races, but people with light skin and who sunburn easily have a higher risk.

Here are a few types of skin cancers according to the American Cancer Society:

  • Basal and Squamous Cell Skin Cancer: They are found in areas exposed to the sun, like your head, neck, and arms, as well as other areas. Although common, basal and squamous cell skin cancer is treatable. While light-skinned individuals are most likely to develop Squamous Cell Skin Cancer, darker-skinned people can too.

  • Merkel Cell Skin Cancer: If you have Merkel cell carcinoma, you need to know what to expect and can help you cope. This cancer usually appears on your face, head or neck as a flesh-colored or bluish-red nodule.
  • Melanoma Skin Cancer: Melanoma develops in a mole or appears as a new dark spot on your skin. It doesn't develop as commonly as other types of cancers, Melanoma is more likely to grow and spread, and is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer.

  • Lymphoma of the Skin: Rare lymphomas that start in the skin are called skin lymphomas (or cutaneous lymphomas). The main types are Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Lymphoma starts in the immune system's cells.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery:

The cancerous area is examined and removed under the microscope. Mohs surgery is performed in the office and takes only a day. Doctors map diseased skin layers to pinpoint the areas that need treatment. Mohs surgery is a skin cancer treatment with a high success rate.
